Realism is an artistic movement that emerged in the mid-nineteenth century with the aim of representing the visible world truthfully and objectively. Rejecting idealisation and Romantic convention, Realist artists turned to everyday life, contemporary society, labour and nature, placing particular emphasis on authenticity, psychological depth and social observation.
