A magnificent Russian silver kovsh, produced by the celebrated workshop of Pavel Akimovich Ovchinnikov in Moscow during the last quarter of the nineteenth century, is an outstanding example of Russian Historicist silverwork. Crafted in 84 zolotnik silver with a gilt interior, the piece is lavishly decorated with superb polychrome cloisonné enamel, demonstrating the exceptional mastery of Moscow enamellers.

The body, executed in the traditional ancient Russian kovsh form, is entirely covered with a rich dark enamel ground upon which unfolds an elegant floral composition. Large stylised blossoms, gracefully scrolling stems and delicate foliage are rendered in a vibrant palette of blue, turquoise, green, red, white and golden tones. The dominant blue hues lend the vessel remarkable freshness and decorative refinement, while the richly gilded interior provides a striking contrast to the brilliance of the enamel, enhancing its luxurious appearance.

The refined cloisonné enamel, sophisticated chromatic harmony and impeccable craftsmanship are characteristic of the finest works produced by the P. A. Ovchinnikov workshop, one of the foremost centres of Russian artistic silver during the second half of the nineteenth century. Owing to its exceptional artistic quality, authentic hallmarks and excellent state of preservation, this kovsh represents an important acquisition for museum collections and discerning collectors of Russian enamelled silver.
