A Polyphon disc music box dating from the late nineteenth century, housed in an elegant walnut case. The rectangular case, raised on a moulded plinth, features a hinged lid decorated with refined marquetry and inlays in contrasting woods. The interior contains the original disc-playing musical mechanism with winding crank, operating a precision-engineered steel comb and sound-producing system activated by interchangeable perforated metal discs. Instruments of this type were celebrated for their powerful tonal projection, mechanical reliability and the ability to perform an extensive musical repertoire through the simple replacement of discs. Polyphon music boxes ranked among the most desirable domestic musical instruments of the late Historicist period and were widely found in distinguished European residences, music salons and grand hotels.
