An impressive large-scale hourglass dating from the late nineteenth century, representing a striking example of decorative art and a refined interior accent characteristic of historic libraries, studies, and reception rooms of the Historicist period. The construction comprises two substantial hand-blown glass bulbs filled with finely graded sand, supported by three finely turned wooden columns and connected by three brass and bronze rods with baluster-form elements. The harmonious proportions, together with the noble combination of glass, wood, and metal, endow the piece with an architectural presence. Hourglasses of this scale served not only as practical instruments for measuring time but also as symbols of contemplation, scholarship, and the philosophical passage of time. Today, such examples are highly sought after as decorative objects, ideally suited to classical interiors, private libraries, collectors cabinets, and historic residences.
