He is represented in a relaxed manner, resting his elbow on his knee. His hat and his bag are placed next to him. He is captured in a melancholic or completive moment thanks to his posture which gives him a dreamy, reflective quality. This kind of imagery was typical in 19th-century romantic movement, where artistic and literary figures were admired for their ability to transcend the mundane and where the individuals unique imagination was prioritised above the strictures of classical form.The clock dial itself shows considerable wear, especially when compared to the more well-preserved gilded elements. The surface appears darkened, and shows wear usual for 19th century objects. Although the Roman numerals are still visible, the clarity is diminished precisely due to the worn surface.The craftsmanship of this piece is of very high quality. The gilding shows a lot of ornaments, such as the subtle floral motifs flanking the clock dial, while the base of the clock is adorned with classical scrollwork. Indeed, the lower side of the clock has a wide section, featuring elaborate designs of flowing acanthus leaves.
