В фокусе внимания и композиции несколько наискосок, опершись на избу передыхает и погружен в свои мысли русский мужик с тощими пожитками. Фигура ходока дана почти со спины, что подчеркивает правдивость и художественную не ангажированность зарисовки. Путник, Странник на Руси - это фигура почти метафизическая. Своеобразная узаконенная святость народной философии мериющий жизнь шагами и родину от края до края. Он носитель мудрости и истины по ту сторону от категорий достатка. Однако, как объективный наблюдатель, художник подмешивает возможность сиюминутной озабоченности. В этом полифония и многогранность смысловых оттенков реальности, которую так любил показывать целиком И.Е.Репин.
