Champleve

Champlevé enamel or otherwise champleve is a jewelry technique for applying enamels to metal products, known since the 12th century. In the 12-18 centuries this technique was called "Limoges enamel" after the name of the city where this technique of applying enamel was first applied.

In the course of execution, the technique consists of several stages. First, the indentations are made on the engraved metal base. Then these "hollows" are filled with multi-colored enamel. After applying the enamel in the recess on the metal, firing is performed to fix the enamel layer. When using transparent enamel after firing, the surface goes through a thorough grinding and polishing process. Champlevé enamels are applied to silver, gold and copper items.

Champlevé enamel implies different options and combinations of different techniques. For example, the image is performed in such a way that colored enamel covers the entire surface and only metal contour lines remain, or vice versa, only an engraved line drawing is enameled with black enamel.
